    Asalam u alaikum!

Omaze UK is a for-profit entertainment company that operates with a social purpose. It raises funds for charities such as Teenage Cancer Trust, British Heart Foundation, Marie Curie, and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The company generates funds by inviting members of the public to purchase entries into prize draws, such as a £5 million house draw or a £1 million monthly draw. Upon purchasing entries, participants are entered into these competitions.

In addition to paid entries, Omaze also offers a free postal entry route. This allows individuals to participate without purchasing entries, requiring only the cost of a Royal Mail second-class stamp to submit their details by post.

Omaze is not registered as a gambling operator, as it provides a free method of entry alongside paid options. As mentioned, its primary objective is to raise funds for charitable causes.

    My questions are as follows:

    1. Would it be considered impermissible (haram) to subscribe or purchase entries, given that a significant portion of the funds is donated to charity, while the remainder is used for salaries and operational expenses?
    2. If paid participation is considered impermissible, would the free postal entry route also be regarded as impermissible, given that no payment is made to Omaze itself and the only cost incurred is postage through Royal Mail?

It is gambling and not allowed, no matter that a portion of this fund is used for charity. In Arabia, the gambling on camels’ meat was meant to be given in charity as a show of generosity, but it was forbidden despite its benefit, and the Quran announced that its harm is more than its benefit.

The second part of your question requires some more details; the provided description is not enough for me to understand the problem.

    Thanks for your reply.

To enter the prize competition at Omaze you don’t have to necessarily have to pay for subscriptions. You can enter free. You just need to write your name, phone, email etc on a piece of paper and send it via post to them.

I want to know if this allowed as I am not paying Omaze anything. I am just paying Royal Mail to deliver my paper.

    I hope it’s clear now?

It is not gambling. If they randomly give some money or a thing to some people, it is their right to give and it is allowed for others to take it.
