Islam has given us modesty guidelines, Where Allah tells the believers to guard their privates. It would make sense to then cover the private areas as well as the areas surrounding it, for women it would include most of the body.

However when it comes to areas like the ankles, calves and shin, or hands up till the elbows, would it be sinful to expose that? for example if Im really hot and I roll up my sleeves up to my elbow, would that arm expose be sinful? Similarly, if my pants don’t reach all the way down to my ankles, and they raise higher when i sit down, would I be sinful for that ankle and slightly higher up (leg) exposure?

As far as I’ve heard, a woman’s awrah is everything except her hands, feet and face, but with the above instances would it still be haram to show these non intimate areas?

Please watch the video series Khawateen Ka Parda, by Ghamidi saheb which addresses all your questions.

In short, only the private parts are called Awrah. The adjacent parts to the private parts are covered in order to fulfill the command guard your private parts. However the body parts away from the pro private parts are covered to achieve the highest level of decency. To cover them is not obligatory. So if one exposes them it is not sinful. But one should observe the cultural norma of decency.
