    Assalamu Alaikum,

I wanted to ask about something that genuinely worries me, and I would appreciate your guidance without judgment.

I have sisters, and because we all live in different countries, we stay connected through a WhatsApp group. At the end of the day, we share what happened in our lives, our good moments, bad moments, work stress, household issues, family matters, and general daily experiences. This group helps us feel emotionally close and connected despite the distance.

Sometimes, during these conversations, we also talk about our in-laws or family situations in a joking or gossip-like way. We may make fun of situations or laugh about people’s habits and behaviors. We also make fun of ourselves and our own families at times. Usually, the intention is not hatred or harming anyone, but rather to feel lighter, relax emotionally, and bond with each other. After these conversations, we genuinely feel happier and emotionally relieved.

However, I have started worrying whether this falls under gheebah (backbiting) and whether it could be considered a major sin. This fear makes me anxious because I do not want to displease Allah, but at the same time, this connection with my sisters is emotionally important for us. If we are not trying to hurt anyone and it does not affect those people externally, does that change the ruling? How can we maintain closeness, emotional support, and laughter as sisters without falling into sin? We unintentionally end up talking about other people in some way. Sometimes it starts with sharing our daily experiences or frustrations, and then naturally turns into discussing someone’s behavior or actions. It is usually not planned with bad intentions, but I still worry whether this habit itself becomes sinful even when it happens casually and unintentionally.

I sincerely want to improve and protect my deen while also preserving this beautiful bond with my sisters.

    JazakAllah
