Many scientists believe that the theory of evolution is correct because it is based on strong evidence. This includes fossil records, the close DNA similarity between humans and chimpanzees (about 98-99%), and real examples of natural selection that we can see today. On the other hand, the design argument says that living things are very complex and well-designed, like a Boeing 747 airplane, which could not have been created by chance alone. Therefore, there must be an intelligent designer.

According to your understanding of the Quran and Islam, how do these two ideas fit together? How much of the theory of evolution can Muslims accept as the way God created life? And what is the special place of Adam (peace be upon him) and the divine soul in this process?

In the Qur’an God has told us that man was not evolved from one species to another. Man was created straight from mud. Their different generations interbreed unless two of them were selected as Adam and Eve to receive the human personality. Before them man did not have human personality that gave him conscience and consciousness.

Evolution doesn’t rule out that it was a great design that required knowledge and direction to produce the desired result we see now.
