  • Question About Fasting On Ashura

Posted by Maria Ali on June 22, 2026 at 5:48 am

The fast of Ashura is highly virtuous, and it is especially associated with the Sunnah of two prophets. However, is it necessary to fast on the 9th of Muharram in order to fast on the 10th? I heard from Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza that, in order to differ from the Jews, one must also fast on the 9th or the 11th of Muharram. Is this correct? I have read about the fast of this day in the book Mizan by Javed Ahmed ghamdi , but I did not come across anything of this sort.

@Irfan76 sir In my view, it does not seem correct that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would have said this. If he did say it, then what was the wisdom behind being different from the Jews in this matter?

To differ from Jews or Christians is in matters of Bidat or deviation from Deen. In good things, we do not differ from them.

It is not compulsory to fast on 9 as well.

Thanks for your reply. However, I would like to keep it as a voluntary fast. But a person’s voluntary acts are not accepted until the obligatory duties are fulfilled. So do I need to complete my missed Ramadan fasts first, or do I have until the next Ramadan to make them up?
