The consensus of the community of Sahaba confirms that it came from the Prophet and was transmitted to the next generations as it was. It is the same as we do now. We, with consensus, transmit it to others. The companions did the same.

But how do we know Sahaba had consensus on this? Any evidence outside Ahadith ?

You should learn how consensus (ijma and Tawatur) reporting works in the transmission of historical events.
If there were no ijma and tawatur, it would never have taken place. If there is ijma today, it must have derived from past ijma.
