I have a couple of questions regarding Surah Yasin (36:6–7) for which I have not yet found a satisfactory answer.

    The verses are:

As I understand it, according to Ghamidi Sb, verse 6 refers to Bani Ismail i.e. the Quraysh who were being addressed by the Prophet Muhammad.

    However, verse 7 states that:

“The decree has become binding upon most of them, so they will not believe.”

This raises two questions for me:

    1. If “most” of the Quraysh would not believe, then according to the principle of itmam al-hujjah, those who persisted in rejection after the truth had been conclusively established against them should have become liable to divine punishment. Historically, however, it does not appear that most of the Quraysh were destroyed or punished in that manner. How is this to be understood? If most of Quraysh didn’t believe according to this verse, then “most” of Quraysh should have been killed according to Qanoon of itmam al hujjah. But this is not true historically.
    2. This also seems difficult to reconcile with Surah al-Nasr, which indicates that large numbers of people eventually entered Islam. Historically, many Quraysh accepted Islam, especially around and after the conquest of Makkah. If verse 7 is referring to the same group mentioned in verse 6, how can it be said that “most of them will not believe”?

How should we understand the relationship between verses 6 and 7? The natural reading seems to be that the phrase “most of them” (أكثرهم) in verse 7 refers back to the people mentioned in verse 6. @Irfan76 @Umer25

This is about the leaders of Qureish. They were opposing the prophet, not the ordinary people of Qureish.

Thanks, but where’s the qarinah in the verse that indicates that the verse is only about leaders of Quraysh and not all people of Quraysh of that time? The normal reading of the verse suggest its about all Bani Ismail of Prophet’s time, which means all of Quraysh of that time.

Ghamidi sb also said the same in his footnote.

    Translation:

    Footnote 5

یہ اشارہ بنی اسمٰعیل کی طرف ہے جن کے پاس پچھلے ڈھائی ہزار سال میں کوئی رسول نہیں آیا تھا۔

    ——

Are you suggesting that it was only the leaders of Quraysh who opposed the Prophet, and not the ordinary people of Quraysh and therefore the verse means that the majority of the leaders of Quraysh would not believe?

Is it historically true that the majority of the leaders of Quraysh did not believe?

In any case, it’s hard to conclude from a straightforward reading of the verse that it is referring only to the leaders of Quraysh. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

One needs to learn about the stylistics of the Quran. All the prophets address the chiefs of their nations. Only chiefs oppose the prophets. When you read about the ordinary ones, they are suggested not to follow their leaders. They are not rebuked for posing any threat to the prophets.

    See the next verse

    إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَالًا فَهِيَ إِلَى الْأَذْقَانِ فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ

This picturizes the chiefs and their arrogance. Ghamidi Saheb writes:

” their necks have become stuck in this position so that they are not being able to observe any reality that lies upwards and downwards, rightwards and leftwards. This is a picture of the arrogant.”
