  • When Is It Permissible To End Ties With Relatives In Islam?

Posted by Maria Ali on July 2, 2026 at 1:35 pm

In Islam, maintaining family ties is very important, but does that mean these ties must never be broken under any circumstances? Where is the limit?
I believe that, in some cases, even a single act of humiliation can be enough. Some of my close family relationships have ended because of this. Many people may consider insults or humiliation to be normal, but I do not.
When someone tries to provoke me, I do not react. Instead, I simply stop speaking to that person afterward.
What guidance does Islam provide on this matter? If a relative humiliates or disrespects someone, is it permissible to distance oneself from that relative?

And never speak to them again. If interaction ever becomes necessary, it should only be on a formal basis.

To be clear, I am talking about siblings, not distant relatives.
