Assalamualaikum. How do we understand this hadith:

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.

Here Deen means ways. It means that man is influenced by the company he keeps.

Thank you for your response brother.

But deen usually means religion in Arabic, right? Of course, a word can have more than one meaning depending on the context, but how do we determine that “deen” here refers to “ways”?

The sentence and the context determine the meaning of a word.

Deen of friends or Deen of kings are terms used to tell the ways of friends and the ways of kings.

Has the word “deen” been used in such ways in other Ahadith or the Qur’an?

In Arabic dictionaries, the word Deen includes the meaning

    سيرة. – عادة. – حال. – شأن.

Which means personal traits, habits, and condition.

Wa alaikum assalam. I understand this hadith as a reminder that the people we spend the most time with gradually shape our character, habits, and even our faith, so choosing good company really matters.
