Diyat Amount And Gender
Why is the Diyat amount gendered in Islam?
Why is a woman’s diyat half as that of a man? does that imply that a woman’s life holds a lesser value than a man? if the earlier islamic practice was as such even if women did not earn and a man did, and a man being killed, his family receiving the full diyat amount would no doubt benefit them… but if a women is killed and she’s a mother than her children suffer an inestimable loss. Even if she is not a mother why is it half?
And even today when some women who work and look after the house, they sometimes contribute more than a man, if the diyat amount is the compensation for financial contribution made by the person for their household.
