Is Marriage Compulsory ?

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“When a servant gets married, he has completed half of his religion. So let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half.”

A friend of mine has decided that he does not want to marry. This raised a question in my mind regarding the hadith that says, “When a person marries, he has completed half of his religion.”
Does this hadith mean that a person who deliberately chooses not to marry loses or fails to complete half of his religion? Or was the Prophet ﷺ addressing a specific circumstance, making the hadith conditional rather than universally applicable?
My friend believes that if he remains unmarried throughout his life and dies in that state, he may be granted the opportunity in the Hereafter to marry a woman whom he deeply loved in this world.
From an Islamic perspective, is this belief a valid reason to avoid marriage altogether? Is there any evidence from the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah that supports such an expectation?
