Marriage To Non-Muslims Of Zoroastrian Faith

I am writing to seek your guidance on an issue of Islamic jurisprudence that has become very important to two close friends of mine.
One of them is a Muslim man, and the other is a woman who follows the Zoroastrian faith. They wish to get married, but his family is strongly opposed to the marriage and has threatened to sever all ties with him if he proceeds.
In trying to better understand the Islamic perspective on this matter, I found that the majority of scholars consider marriage between a Muslim man and a Zoroastrian woman to be impermissible. However, I also came across references to some early jurists, such as Abū Thawr, who reportedly permitted such marriages on the basis that the Majūs were originally recipients of a revealed scripture.
I would be grateful if you could share your view on this issue. Do you consider the opinion attributed to Abū Thawr to be a valid and applicable position today? If not, could you kindly explain why the Qur’anic permission granted to the People of the Book is generally understood not to extend to Zoroastrians?

If the girl believes in one God and the hereafter, though with some differences, and a divine scripture, she can be considered as Ahl e Kitab, and the Muslim man can marry her. But they should consider the social and religious complications their marriage may involve.
