Are Women Really The Majority Of Hell’s Inhabitants?
I have a question regarding a hadith about women being among the majority of the inhabitants of Hell.
Nowadays, this hadith is frequently shared on social media, and some people use it to say that women are destined for Hell or to portray women as inherently sinful. They present this hadith as evidence.
I would like to understand this issue properly from the Quran and authentic Hadith.
What exactly did the Prophet ﷺ mean by saying that women would form the majority of the inhabitants of Hell?
Is this statement about all women, or does it refer to women who commit certain specific sins, such as ingratitude mentioned in the hadith?
Does the Quranic message support interpreting this hadith in such a general way?
Is there any problem with the wording/content (matn) of this hadith when compared with the Quran?
Or is there any issue concerning its chain of transmission (sanad)?
How should we understand this hadith without using it to claim that women as a group are inherently “Jahannami”?
