  • About Zakat/Tax From Non-Muslims

How would an economy function in a country where the government imposes only Zakat on Muslims, while non-Muslim residents are exempt from Zakat but are required to pay a different tax at a rate similar to Zakat?

If both Muslims and non-Muslims are citizens/residents of the same country and are subject to the same laws, how can the government ensure equal treatment and fairness in taxation?

Would imposing different taxes on people based on their religion be considered equality under one nation? And if the government provide public services, infrastructure, security, healthcare, education, and other necessities, how would such a taxation system work fairly for everyone?

My question is: What would be the most economically sustainable and legally fair taxation model for a multi-religious nation where some people pay Zakat and others pay a separate tax?

There is no compulsion on an Islamic Government as far as non-muslims are concerned. Their decision is to be based after debate and consultation in the parliament. It may be equal to Zakat on Muslims or it may be more or less than that. However, every Islamic Government is bound to observe both merit and justice in all circumstances.

There exists a solid basis on grounds of reason and logic that a state must collect some wealth to run its affairs. This amount has been quantified by Allah for an Islamic Government as far as Muslims are concerned. As for non-muslims, this needs to be decided by the collective decision of the society through their representatives.
