Such instructions should be understood in the category of admonition, moral guidance, and good conduct. The practices encouraged in such hadiths concerning manners and behavior are not necessarily obligatory or compulsory; rather, they are to be adopted as part of good conduct.

At times, the underlying purpose of religious instructions is to emphasize refinement, dignity, and respect for old age, rather than to prescribe explicit punishments or express a severe prohibition. In religion, only those matters that are definitively established through the Quran or Sunnah are obligatory.

If some general moral or social principle can be derived from specific instructions found in the hadiths—such as the instruction not to pluck out grey hairs—it should be understood and practiced at that level, rather than insisting upon it as though it were an obligation or prohibition of Shariah.
