Sir, i would like to ask: In your opinion, is it possible to understand the Quran solely through translations and by using our own reasoning? Of course, I also try to understand the meaning of each word and the context in which the verse was revealed. However, I’ve heard that this is strictly forbidden.
Those who say it is not permitted are traditionalists or Salafis who make this claim. They say—if I’m not mistaken—that to understand the Quran, one must rely on the Sunnah of the Prophet (that is, authentic hadiths) and teachings consistent with the interpretations of the Prophet’s companions. This means we must study under someone whose teachings are guaranteed to align with those of the Prophet’s companions.
They say this is done so that there are no different interpretations of the Quran from what the Prophet taught, because……of course, the Prophet’s explanation of the Quran is the most accurate. This is also linked to the verse stating that the Prophet was tasked with explaining the revelation sent down to his people, and that explanation was the authentic hadiths. That is why I once heard a statement from a scholar that “The Quran is the text and the hadith are its explanations; therefore, the Quran actually needs the hadith more than the hadith need the Quran.”
