Qawwamiyat In Islam: Gender-Based Authority Or Responsibility?”
Sir, I have a question.
In the Qur’an, a man is described as “Qawwam” over women, and the reasons given include financial responsibility, protection, and responsibility for the family. So, in today’s context, if a woman earns for herself, is financially independent, supports her family, manages property or a business, and can also manage her own protection and major responsibilities, then why should Qawwamiyat still be specifically associated with men?
Is the basis of Qawwamiyat simply that traditionally men were the ones who went outside to earn and provide protection? If a woman can also practically perform those same responsibilities, then is it necessary to understand the Qur’anic word “Qawwam” as gender-based authority, or is its actual concept one of responsibility and accountability?
And if both husband and wife are financially capable and responsible, what are the exact practical boundaries of the husband’s Qawwamiyat in Islam?
الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ
“Men are Qawwam over women…”
(Qur’an 4:34)بِمَا أَنفَقُوا مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ
“…because they spend from their wealth.”
