Islam Aims To Gradually End Slavery Yet These Two Ahadith Seem Against That
Salam Alaikum,
From studying previous answers on this website I came to the conclusion that Islam participated greatly and aimed to gradually ending slavery however,
When studying the characteristics of the prophet peace be upon him you would predict that he wouldn’t own a slave himself or that he wouldn’t participate in slave trading because he encourages their freedom. Yet there are some ahadith where the prophet does engage in slave trades
The prophet peace be upon him is our moral example and is our example through all times. Yet I cannot fathom that he participated in slave trading. How do I get over this?
It was narrated from Anas that :
the Prophet (ﷺ) bought Safiyyah for seven slaves. (Sahih) (One of the narrators) ‘Abdur-Rahman said: “From Dihyah Kalbi.’ From Sahib Ibn Majeh. Another variation of the Hadith exists in Muslim.
Another Hadith
There came a slave and pledg- ed allegiance to Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) on migration; he (the Holy Prophet) did not know that he was a slave. Then there came his master and demanded him back, whereupon Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) said: Sell him to me. And he bought him for two black slaves, and he did not afterwards take allegiance from anyone until he had asked him whether he was a slave (or a free man) sahih Muslim 1602
