If today’s polytheist said I understand the Quran the word of God and am arrogantly denying it we would not kill him because it is God’s sunnah that he only brings adhab when a Rasul is present

This is correct. Our job is to deliver the message to today’s polytheists in the best possible way. What anyone does with that message is not our responsibility.
Those who are killed at the time of prophets are killed with the direct orders of God, and after the last prophet, this will never take place again in this world. The direct addressees of a prophet are not only given clear signs to understand the truth, they are also warned well in advance about how the future shall unfold for the deniers of the truth. All of this it is done with precision that’s way beyond human.

I read it but it is inconsistent. When someone denies the message knowing it is true, why God continued his test, just because the messenger is not present ? How is messenger not being present impact the test at all when the person is saying he is convinced that the message is true but he will still deny it.. now what is the point of having the messenger at all when the message is perfectly reached him ? Remember when Prophet sent letters to kings, and after his death, the sahabas attacked those kingdoms, the messenger was not required to be personally present in order to attack and kill those kingdoms.
