Working Woman
While reading book “Purdah” written by Mulana Maududi, a qusetion arose in my mind when he makes the menstrual cycle of woman a reason to not let them work in politics and other important administrative tasks, as during this period their ability to comprehend things decline and they undergo major psychological changes which put a strain on the efficiency of overall working system. Is this is a fact and should we only allow our wonams to be housewives and only responsibility they can handle is to bring up a child?

I work with a lot of smart and intelligent women and I haven’t observed any decline in the quality or efficiency of their work .. Maulana saab’s observations are misplaced.

I respect your experience but i want to get an answer based on facts.

What facts do you expect ? How can it be proven ? Even if it is true that on some days the women’s efficiency is reduced (it is not) , it doesn’t impact their overall performance..
Women take maternity leaves twice or 3 times in their career, leading to around 1.5 years of lack of productivity, that is a bigger argument against their work efficiency..
However, in a long career, even these things don’t matter..

Arguments of maulana is based on a fact that woman has to go through this cycle every months for 8-10 days, if this is a fact then it put up a strain on the system and their working efficiency.
The facts which i was asking in my previous reply are 1)they go through psychology change or not and what about their efficency of work during that time.

The careers nowadays are dependent on overall performances and hence even the lapses in certain days don’t affect their overall performance over the year.

I have seen some employees taking medical leaves for 2 years .. and still outperform their colleagues…

It is indeed proven that women do lose productivity due to their periods. However, can we say that men perform at peak performance every day of their lives? Also, is there any evidence that being a housewife and raising children a lesser important task than any other professional job? Keeping in mind that households build societies, and societies build nations, I would tend to disagree. Besides there are plenty of places in the world where the survival of families is dependent upon women’s incomes. Should we let them die hungry just because women are less productive during their cycles?

Maulana Maudoodi Sb is correct. The Creator made men and women differently because their roles in life are different their responsibilities are different. Women’s body is designed to give birth to children, breast feed them, they are psychologically and emotionally more suitable to tend to children,raise a family,manage a household etc. Men are to go out earn the bread. If women have to go out and work for any reason they’re as intelligent and fully capable, but they’re not born to earn money and support the family financially.Their primary duties are as I mentioned above.

Nowadays, many corporate jobs don’t require hunting and facing wild animals and protecting your family from them, and hence the physical strength is not necessarily needed for them.. and mentally, women and men are usually equally capable.
There is nothing like “primary” duty of any gender.. child birth and breast feeding can go simultaneously with their career .. many women don’t want to marry, and have children. It is wrong to say that they need to do their primary duty. It is individual choice and preference.
Your statement about “women are not born to earn money and support the family financially” is not correct.. Nobody is born to earn money and support the family financially anyway. Nature doesn’t care about our money and family support. It depends on the condition and individual capabilities/interests and not gender.
Both men and women should opt for careers what their talents, and passions guide them to do.

Women may be less productive for a few days a month, but that does not make them less intelligent than men. If a woman has become a doctor it would be tragic if she does not practice after marriage worse if she is a specialist. Also sometimes it is very necessary to supplement the husband’s income for the betterment of the family. Yes, the woman has to look after the home and children, but working does not take this away from her. Also a woman may find fulfillment in her profession whether it is medicine, law, architecture or anything else and there is nothing wrong with that. Our women are highly educated these days and our religion has not stopped women from working.

If you put the same workload in professional setting on men and women both, and on top of it, expect women to take care of the home and children as well, it is injustice to them.
