    In Surah Al-Imran in verse 149 it says

    “O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will send you back in your heels, and you will turn back (from faith) as losers”

    Narrated Samurah bin Jundub(rad);

    Allahs messenger(saw) said : “Anybody (from among the Muslims) who meets, gathers together, lives, and stays (permanently) with a mushrik and agrees to his ways, opinion, etc. and (enjoys) his living with him then he (that Muslim) is like him (that mushrik).”

    Does this mean that we have an obligation as Muslims to move to a country where Islam is the main faith?

    Both the ayah 3:149 and the hadith you mentioned should be understood in their context. In general, there’s no religious obligation to leave a certain country, unless there’s religious persecution taking place in that country against Muslims.

    No we don’t!

    First of all, the verse you just quoted, it is addressed to the disbelievers of that time only and this fact becomes very clear when you look at the flow of these verses. The verses are talking about the battle of uhad and the disbelievers mentioned here are of that particular era only, as can be seen in the following verses:

    “Believers! If you obey these disbelievers, they will revert you back and you will end up as losers. [It is not these people] but God Who will help you and His help is the best. [You will see that] We will strike your awe in the hearts of these disbelievers because they associated other deities besides God for whom He has revealed no sanction. The Fire shall be their abode and what an evil abode is it for those who have wronged their souls. God fulfilled His promise [of help] made with you when, by His permission, you were putting them to the sword. But afterwards you yourselves showed weakness and differed with each other in following the directive and disobeyed [the Prophet] after you had seen what you wished for. [This is a reality that] some among you preferred this world and some the next. [Consequently, after this victory] God turned you away from them to test you [so that those who are after the pleasures of this world become distinct] and the truth is that He still forgave you and God is gracious to the faithful. Remember when you were fleeing and were not even turning to look behind and the Prophet of God was calling you [from behind you] in one of your groups [which was standing alongside him]; So God inflicted you with one sorrow after another so that [after passing through this trial] you do not grieve [in future] on what you lose and on any calamity which may befall you. And [remember that] God knows whatever you do”. (3: 149-153)

    Secondly, all these ahadith on the said topic actually related to polytheists of those time and that too after itmam-e-hujjah (completion of proof) was done by the Prophet (sws) on those polytheists. Of course on one side there was Prophet of God and on the opposite side were these polytheists; how can it be allowed that a person claiming to be a Muslim keeps any kind of relationship with the polytheists after itmam-e-hujjat of the Prophet (sws) on them. This is the same reason why the inheritance and marital associations were also revoked between Muslims and Polytheists after the same itmam-e-hujjah.
