There is no technical work around when God has explicitly forbidden something. Acts like these stand in contradiction to taqwa, especially when the essence of any hukam has been clearly understood by the person and the creation of a technical work around itself tells that there is no mistake in understanding the essence of that particular order, it is equivalent to an act to fisq/sarkashi right in front of God.

But this specific act- according to what I know- the order was just to not hunt or fish on that specific day. So if they set a net out the day before how does it violate the order?

I think I am missing some facts and nuances here. Maybe their actions lead them to not being fully devoted on the day of sabbath

Behind every ritual and directive, lies its spirit and essence. No doubt the rituals and directives do hold a value of their own, but at the end of it, it is the essence and taqwa which matters. Any inadvertent/unintentional negligence in Rituals can be ignored, but a stern approach in following the law which doesn’t have taqwa at the very core of it, is a useless activity and God is in no need of that activity.

In the Sabbath incident, they might be following the law by finding a loophole in it, but in the very act they forgot who they are trying to fool or play with. The followed the law but in doing so, lost the essence and spirit of what was actually required of them which any person with a common sense would know unless he has mala fide intentions.

If someone prays salah only reading surah kawthar and saying just Subhan Allah in sajda and ruku and sitting for a short time in tashahud- he is doing a similar thing. But it seems perfectly fine no?

God knows their intention and that they were doing it for a wrong reason- maybe arrogance or greed or defiance. So maybe that’s the reason.

But how can someone be blamed for finding a loophole in the law?

The crime of the people of the sabbath was not only that they disobeyed, but ayahs 7:163-166 make it very clear that they disdainfully persisted in their disobedience. There were people amongst them who were trying to stop them making it absolutely clear that if they continued in that manner, God will destroy them. When they denied after understanding what was required of them, God separated believers from the non-believers as per his sunnah, and punished the non-believers.

If we read those ayaat it seems that the Jews actually fished on sabbath itself rather than finding a technical loophole. Is this correct?
