  • Relative Equivalence And Importance Of Sunnah

    AoA,

I have seen the list (link is given at the end) of Sunnah by Mr. Umer Qureshi (Moderator). Is there a relative priority within this list? For example, if we take the following Sunnah out of that list:

    xiii. Keeping mustaches trimmed

ix. Slaughtering in the prescribed manner of tadhkiyah by pronouncing Allah’s name

xii. Saying al-Hamdulillah (praise be to Allah) after sneezing and responding to it by saying Yarhamukallah (may Allah have mercy on you)

    xvii. Circumcising the male offspring

Ideally, we should follow all and there is no second opinion about it, however, if we see, “xiii. Keeping mustaches trimmed” is not much followed, however, on the other hand “xvii. Circumcising the male offspring” is widely followed. Why is there a relative importance to one thing but not to another? Similarly, “ix. Slaughtering in the prescribed manner….” is followed more than “xii. Saying alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah) after sneezing”.

    Asslamualikum!

As a principle, all these Sunnah are equally important to be followed by the Muslims. The reason why preference is given to one over another in practical life has to do more with socio-economic dynamics of Muslim societies as well as with lack of understanding in the true essence of religion.

Some of these actions (Sunnah) can have tangible long term or tangible immediate affects like slaughter, circumcision etc. while others may not have that kind of tangible affects like Tashneed, eating with right hand etc. And added with lack of understanding in the rationale behind these Sunnah, people tend to show leniency toward the latter and more strictness toward the former. The fear of immediate rebuke by others can also affect sensitivity towards certain Sunnah. The factors are endless indeed, but once you understand the rationale behind all these Sunnah and know the relationship between these Sunnah with the overall objective of the religion, then you will be sensitive to all these Sunnah equally and follow all of them more staunchly.
