Stopping Elders Who Are Preaching Lies
If elders are saying misinformation or spreading stories (eg maybe a from a weak or fabricated Hadith) it is not generally accepted in society to correct them and we are called badtameez.
Of course when correcting we would do with utmost respect and kindness so this shouldn’t be a factor of contention in this current scenario.
When we know something is wrong certainly or a lie is it our duty to stop it in front of elders?

One should use their best judgement as to what should be the best strategy in the current scenario. For instance, at times it would be better to wait for the moment to have an opportunity to talk to elder in isolation and at other times, it would be better to present your point openly to people (for example, just mentioning of this fact would suffice that in your understanding that particular narration is weak or fabricated, etc.) just so people should know the alternative viewpoint if its a sensitive matter. But in all circumstances, respect should be maintained.

But is it a duty such that we should constantly be on the lookout for such a moment?

Now-a-days it is much easier, you can simply text, email or call them.

I understand but if the opportunity arises and we don’t for laziness or because we are scared for awkwardness is it an Islamic obligation to clear up something like this?
