What difference would that make whether the lineage can or cannot be traced through women?

I ask because of the verse- does it have a different context or does it mean there are no descendants? And does descendants have a specific context?

The verse is in the context of adopted-son Zaid (rta) and His divorcee Hazrat Zainab (rts), and defining their relationship with the Prophet (sws), it has nothing to do with who are the biological descendants of Prophet Muhammad (sws) and how to determine them.
