Why did Allah use two different words for year in the ayah:

    Al-‘Ankabut – 29:14

    Arabic

    وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِيهِمۡ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمۡسِينَ عَامًا فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلطُّوفَانُ وَهُمۡ ظَٰلِمُونَ

We use this ‘usloob’ even in our today’s urdu, its a matter of simple language use.

Come to Pakistan and live for a few months, you’ll experience it yourself Wink

During normal social interactions like shopping and others, you can experience this kind of usloob (not too frequent, but it does exist and people are cognizant of this usloob)

I do come every year bhai. But I haven’t ever hear two different words for year in the same sentence or at all.

Could you just give like the words or a sentence?

Not for years, but now its mostly used in sense of rupees e.g 1,000 kam 50 rupay etc.

Sure sure that’s fine. But why did Allah say سنة then عام. The take 50 is fine

Since I am not an Arabic Linguist, probably our respectable scholar Irfan Shehzad Sahab (@Irfan76 )can give some insight into its linguistics, whenever he gets time.

The use of سنة and عام in the same sentence is to avoid repetition of the same word when it sounds not good and serve no purpose. Also, in Arabic, the former is used for period of trial and troubles and the latter for relief and prosperity. we can assume the it tells that 950 years of Noah’s preaching were very hard on him while the rest of the 50 years which he did not have to spend were a relief.

So does the use of عام increase the effect and paint a picture of greater difficulty?

contrary to it, Aam shows relief as mentioned in the first reply.

Yes- I mean so the 1000 years of hardship – removes 50 years of ease.

So what does this use of different vocabulary entail for any meaning that we would extract?

Unless it’s not used in this sense and it just means year.

In Urdu it is used for age

ان کی عمر پچاس برس دو سال کم

Or in ki Umar pachas saal do baras kam

to avoid repetition of the same word when it sounds not good and serve no purpose.
