    If someone asks is xyz in the room? And you say no he’s not here whilst pointing to your palm- you are technically saying he’s not in your palm even though he’s in your room.

    Is this allowed?

    There are many more examples I’m sure you can imagine

    This is something you have to decide for yourself and your conscience is the best judge.

    As a principle, we all know lying is a major sin. But the matters of application are a different issue, some would be black and white clear, while others would be in the grey area, which a person has to decide for himself.

    A similar example is given in the books about one of our illustrious 4 imams. I forget the name.

    He asked his wife to point at the circle made on the door by him. Tell his students that he is not here to avoid any disturbance during his studies. This is history and should be taken with a grain of salt.

    The point is. There is a technicality indeed. Withholding the truth is suppression of the truth and that is not considered untruth in law.
