    Ta Ha – 20:17

    Arabic

    وَمَا تِلۡكَ بِيَمِينِكَ يَٰمُوسَىٰ

Is there any example of our normal use of language in which we ask about something even when we know what it is?

It is usually when angry we say ‘what are you doing?’ When we know what they are doing.

So what is the reason for God to ask here?

According to tafseer by Syed Modoodi this question was not asked for information, for Allah knew already that Moses (A.S) held a staff in his hand. This question was posed to reassure to Moses A.S that he’s holding a staff so that he can be mentally prepared to see the miracle which was going to be performed with it.

That’s what jalalayn and ibn kathir say too but I’m trying to find an analogy for my understanding

It’s like a magician showing everyone that his hat empty then asks some one from audience to check it, so he can reassure his audience and make them believe that he’s really doing a magic.
