If ihsan means excellence then doesn’t that mean that we should always do the extra actions of wudu since that is the most excellent way to do it and because ihsan is commanded?

Ihsan doesn’t necessarily mean extra in every scenario. It means doing something with excellence to the best of one’s ability or doing something whole-heartedly.

I don’t get it. Whole heartedly would mean that you do all the extra actions. The only reason someone wouldn’t do them is out of laziness (or maybe they’re running late which could be excused)

Ghamidi sb mentioned in his video “Islam, Iman and Ihsan” that Ihsan is the desired level for us to reach. Some scholars have taken Ihsan to be the highest level, however it is the “only” Level, truly. I completely agree to this as this has a strong backing from the Quran itself.

But Ihsan wouldn’t be extra, always. It would be, doing what is appropriate, when it is appropriate, in a way that it is appropriate. (Appropriate would be necessary, proper). According to Ibn Arabi. So sometimes, for us, not doing anything at all would be Ihsan as well if the situation demands it. For example refraining from saying that which is unnecessary (Laghw).

Doing what is necessary and appropriate is to confirm to the Divine Order and conformity is unified action because it acknowledges the Reality of The One.

And the pinnacle of Ihsan for us is Rasool Allah (saw) as he was a Walking Quran (hadith).

But within Islam, Iman and Ihsan also there are different shades or levels. The highest you go, the more you get from Him.

I have heard ihsan to mean perfection. Surely perfection can only be attained by doing an action in its most complete form

Yes complete is the key word. Doing something on the level of Ihsan would make the action Complete. 👍

The most perfect form would be to do all extra actions surely.

Yes Since Prophet (saw) was on the highest level of Ihsan, so performing the sunnah act of an action would make it most perfect. And most complete. The highest level of Ihsan.

(All of this with Ikhlas being a pre requisite).
