    Verse 66:1 from Sahih International:

“O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

What is its proper historical context?

    – Honey matter / Jealousy: https://sunnah.com/muslim/18/27

    – Sex-Slavery / Maria al-Qibtiyah: https://sunnah.com/nasai/36/21

    – General: one shouldn’t prohibit to himself what is made lawful (halal) for him, just to get the approval of others -no matter who they are-

Once we understand the rationale as to why so much sensitivity was shown by God in this regard, then either of these narrations don’t make any problem when seen in that very context. Rest is a matter of historical scrutiny as is done with Akhbar-i-Ahad.
