What does purity mean? What’s the difference between cleanliness? Things like ghusl seem to overlap the two. What is the purpose of ghusl if not hygiene? Is the main purpose purity (what does that mean) and hygiene just a side benefit because of the act being a shower?

purity or cleanliness is to sever two purpose, cleanliness of body and to attain sense of purity. Sense of purity at times is required even if body is clean, for example to make wudu or Ghusal to enable oneself for Namaz.

I am just thinking about the meaning of these words. Isn’t cleanliness is to remove surface level impurities. Pure means clean from within at atomic level…without any external mix of impurities within a metal. For example.. As we say pure gold.

In religious terms I think pure would mean to the level of human soul and cleanliness is surface level removal of impurities.
