Very Long Life Span Of Noah AS
Posted by Bilal on January 24, 2021 at 1:50 pmDear Friends,
I have question regarding authenticity of historical facts presented in the Quran.
As per Holy Books, the prehistoric Prophets(AS) lived for very long ages or long life spans. For example, Hazrat Nuh AS lived for 950 years as per the Holy Quran.
Given that Humans of current era live not more than100 years(despite advances in medicine and science) , it seems unbelievable for prehistoric Human life span to be nearly reaching 1000 years.
Also, It is very difficult to imagine such a life spanning hundreds of years(keeping in view different phases of human life i.e. Childhood, Youth and Old age, which we normally experience today within a 100 years).
From an agnostic position, how can one reconcile with these unbelievable historical facts? Or what should be our approach if a doubt is created in mind due to such facts!
Note: These facts should not fall into “Ghaaib” category and might be verified from historical records/fossils etc.

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 2:53 pmWhy is it hard to believe? What has science proved against it? A question could arise whether this was a miracle just for Nuh AS or did his entire nation live this long? Either way, miracles are miracles

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:19 pmThis mufti guy man. His Quranic interpretations are so wacky. Discussion 31270
The question remains was it nuh عليه السلام himself who lived for so long or his entire nation?

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:23 pmAlso 1000 in base 60 is 216000 in base 10 and 950 in base 60 is 3900 in base 10. It does not reduce the age.

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:27 pmAlso base 60 has letters in it. I wonder if mufti’s research has brought up any letters…

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:19 pmMiracles can be an explanation.
A different analysis can also be an explanation.

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:29 pmThe different one makes no sense. If anything it makes it a greater miracle. Living 1/4 of a million years is a lot more than 1000

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:30 pmIf it’s 1000 in base 60 – 50 our time it comes out to 215500 years. If it’s 1000 our time – 50 in base 60 it’s 700 years.

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:43 pmI tend to focus on the basic principle first. The discovery of different measurement of time units is very fascinating. It might need more analysis and polishing but it definitely needs attention and can’t be, outright, neglected.
Stay blessed, always

Member January 24, 2021 at 4:54 pmI am not sure, we need to put it in the category of miracle or even consider if only Noah lived for 950 years or the entire community at that time. I do not even see anything surprising in this at all.
Do turtles have doctors and thus they live in wild for 200 years. Do Macaw parrorts have doctors and that is why they live close to 70 years of age? How elephants are big just by eating vegetation only? Why Whales who are mammals and breathe air live in ocean and become giants? Is this due to special miracle just like Noah or Noah and his community had to have a special miracle?
Yes these and everything else even a single atom in the universe is a miracle. But not for those looking for a miracle to be something much advance than their time and knowledge that they can’t explain.
There used to be giant humans. Now a days there are white humans, black humans, tall humans, short humans…what is the surprise in long living human? Is Allah so helpless that he could not create long living humans?

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 4:55 pmYes but what was the reason for mentioning it? Perhaps to highlight the arduous nature of prophethood and the arrogance of his people

Member January 24, 2021 at 5:35 pmI do not know, but read Quran over and over and Allah do answer everything that is important to strengthen a person’s faith until a person’s all questions are answered..not litterally, but in faith from heart as a true believer. The person at that point does not has any questions related to faith, but his only effort is to better understand what Allah wants from him to make Allah happy; otherwise every single word in Quran is a complicated question and a faith shaker.
I found every single word in Quran as hiding a mountain of knowledge. Why Allah said Noah lived 1000 years less 50. Why not 950 year. Perhaps there is a very big secret behind it. Just like the code at the beginning of most Surahs.

Contributor January 24, 2021 at 5:42 pmIn the name of Allah, the originator, the ultimate creator.
There are certain principles that should be cleared. The question “can a God create a rock that he himself cannot lift”? It looks like a great question at first instance but, later, we realize it is a fallacy.
The question “can’t a God do what ever he wants”? At first it seems like a great question because HE definitely can, but on a deeper look, there is a principle that God implements on its creation. He has a plan and certain physical laws and processes in place which are, actually, signs for us to study. The signs have to be consistent and firm so that they can be discovered or understood over millenia of human growth.
Giant humans are a myth, not supported by any credible evidence.
Long lives are also not supported by evidence of unearthed humans. So there was no race of long living humans ever. The average life was shorter than now because of 1. Infections 2. Hunger 3. Wars.
As far as a miracle is concerned, prophet Noah’s life span could have been a miracle. Does Allah point out at the “miracles” of all of HIS prophets in the Qur’ān? Directly or indirectly! A point to ponder.
Lives of individual species is just normal. There is nothing special about them. There are trees that are hundreds of years old. That is their nature.
Stay blessed, always.

Member January 24, 2021 at 6:53 pmYes Yaseen Sahib you have a point. But consider this. Many things are not proven and over time they get proven. But my point was that with Allah nothing is impossible. The allegator and sharks are reasonably certainly from much larger ancestors that evolved over millions of years. Many small birds are from extremely large birds or reptiles. So it is not inconceivable that there were giant humans or very long living humans…it is not yet proven as many other things in Quran. Although there is overwhelming evidence that there were giants, just as there is almost certain evidence that there are aliens beings on Earth, but since it is not absolutely certain, scientists have not officially accepted it. But they have not denied it either.

Member January 24, 2021 at 6:59 pmAlso Allah seems to create miracles that comply with the physical laws he created for this universe and all mirscles should be explainable within those laws as our knowledge grows. But now scientists have discovered Quatum physics that does not follow the normal physical laws of this universe. Everything is possible.

Member January 24, 2021 at 7:12 pmBy the way Yaseen sahib, I found the answer to the question that if Allah can do everything can he create a rock big enough that he can’t lift.
The answer is hidden in the question. It is a trick question. The person asking the question, sets the premise or rule that we must accept and not break and it is that Allah can do everything. Then the person tricks us and asks to break his own rule and prove Allah can’t lift the rock. So question is designed to be impossible to answer. The best answer is that Allah can do both. He can create and lift.

Member July 30, 2021 at 7:33 pmSo if the genetic bottleneck due to global floods and loss of most human specie during Noah’s time caused degeneration of genes and thus started a domino affect towards decrease in human life span, then why now that we have the highest population of humans on Earth with global mobility and interracial marriages, human life span is not increasing except a little that is due to better medicine.
Also this research is by one person. This work needs to be reviewed by a panel of independent scientist to make sure proper science was used to come up with the stated conclusions.

Contributor July 30, 2021 at 7:35 pmMy guess would be that it is because humans, no matter how much interracial reproduction is going on today, would have some sort of massive issue due to that extreme bottleneck of that time.
Also if we were to accumulate successful mutations it (especially given that interracial marriages are still quite recent as far as I’m aware and not too common), it would take a very long time for us to see much change

Member July 30, 2021 at 8:00 pmYou may be right Ahmad. Still consider this. Life span close to 1000 years was normal at that time, it was not an exception. That means everyone carried that gene. Even after the floods Noah carried that gene. If most others that survived were abnormal with short life span, perhaps then genetic degeneration can happen; otherwise long life gene should continue. The gene should still be in our system sleeping. Someone need to find and reactivate it.
