  • Stopping Medical Treatment For Financial Rasons

Suppose a relatively older person with medical condition that is curable, but very costly. These days some medical procedures or treatments are so expensive that some families either can’t afford it or would drive them to bankruptcy by the time treatment is complete or sometimes even before the treatment is complete.

In this case what are the rights and obligations of the patients and family?

If treatment is stopped by the patient before total bankruptcy and the patient dies, does it constiute suicide. What if the family decides to stop spending before total bankruptcy and the patient dies. Does it constiute killing and a grave sin?

Suicide and murder are both intentional. As a principle if death occurs due to resource constraints it’s not considered a sin. An individual in the situation has to decide how much financial burden can he bear and compare it to the chances of recovery as per doctor’s advice. General rulings can’t be provided for such matters.

Thanks Faisal. It is the logical answer.

It is a judgement call on behalf of the patient and family.

Any Allah fearing patient or family will end up spending every penny, even borrowing, in fear that their decision to stop treatment may earn them grave sin.

I wish it could have been defined, how much is appropriate to spend. My guess is that just as Allah instructed about charity to not be so charitable to put yourself in financial trouble. The same goes in this case, but much harder to decide the amount in this case.

What would Ghamidi Sahib say on this?
