    During sleep humans are unconscious as if they have died. Here the ayah has used is as a sign. You can read more about it in al bayan by Ghamidi sb or tadaburre quran by Amin Ahsan Islahi sb.
    Here I will mention that some scholars such as Ibn e kathir and Qurtubi has taken it as literal.

    The word soul is not used there . Quran mention the word “Nafs” which refer to “self” and there is consences among philosophers and psycologists that we lose this sense when we sleep. Allah SWT uses this common phenomenon that we see in front of us as a sign of life after death. Jazak Allah Hu Khair
