    Al-Baqarah – 2:219

What does it mean for alcohol to have ithm kn it as it is generally translated to usurping the rights of others?

The definition given here doesn’t seem to fit alcohol and it’s effects

Also it says فيهما اثم not ‘they are ithm’. So could this hint to the fact that actually getting drunk is the haraam thing?

Ithm can be used in both usurping someone’s rights, especially when it comes among different sins, and in broader sense, as a sin itself. The context and sentence structure helps in determining that. Please refer to the short response by Ghamidi Sahab I shared in the following thread:

Yes but the point is that ‘alcohols has ithm in it’ not that ‘alcohol is an ithm’. So how does this mean that alcohols is haraam?

It is the intoxication which makes it an ithm. It is Quran’s general way of prohibiting things, where most prevalent or representative things are picked and verdict given, and the common illat can then be extracted from that verdict and applied in other similar situations involving the same illat. And the intoxication is haraam because it harms people correct? So if one drinks in the middle of a desert there should be no issue. I don’t think there’s any other ruling that can be talked about like this is there?

Intoxication is not haram because it harms people, it is haram because it is a spiritual impurity, whether it be on an isolated desert or in a populated city.
