ٱتَّبِعُواْ مَن لَّا يَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ أَجۡرًا وَهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ
Al-An’am – 6:90
Arabic
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ هَدَى ٱللَّهُۖ فَبِهُدَىٰهُمُ ٱقۡتَدِهْۗ قُل لَّآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ أَجۡرًاۖ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

These verses are specifically talking about rank of prophethood which logic dictates should be free from financial or other material compensation in return. But If a scholar is giving both his time and effort, then there’s no harm in demanding compensation.
