    Al-Baqarah – 2:213

    Al-Bayan:

The actual word used is ‘إِذْنِ’ which means permission. This permission from the Almighty is both to provide the evil-doers with opportunity to do more evil and to support the righteous to do more good. Here, obviously, the latter aspect is implied.

My question is that is the إذن referring to God يعني هل هدى الله بإذنه? Because that doesnt make sense to change the word to grace and say God gave himself permission to guide.

Or is it that آمنوا وكانوا مهتَدين بإذنه? That they believed and were guided by his permission?

    Fatir – 35:32

I found this ayah and over here the meaning of فضل and إذن can’t be the same because they are mentioned distinctly. The leave of God or his permission for people to do good is a pleasure? So if it weren’t for God’s permission these people could’ve never been forerunners in good deeds? Where does freewill stand?

In the second verse, the word Fadal explains Izn. This permission resulted in their favour so it was a grace of God. God’s grace comes after man shows his steps forward to Him. so when they believe, they were guided further. this further guidance can’t be achieved without God’s guidance and it is about the details of religion, and also to get closer to God.

The second verse makes sense that the actions of the people were a result of the permission of God.

But in 2:213 I still don’t get it. هل هدى الله بإذنه او هل آمنوا بإذنه? If it was the former then what does it mean for God to guide with his permission? If it meant the grace of God then that is expanded upon like it was in 35:32 as mentioned above. But if ذلك فضل الله is not mentioned what evidence is there to translate إذن as grace and not permission?

You perhaps take Izn as decree, it is permission, which is a passive action. God has made provisions for good and bad. so whatever is done, it is done with his permission. so if one accepts faith, it is with the facility provided by God and if one rejects it is the provision provided by God which is translated as Izn or permission.

So would you say this translation is wrong:

‘So God guided by the backing of His grace those who believed [in the Qur’ān]15in all these differences regarding the truth, and God guides whom He intends [according to His law] to the straight path.16 (213)’

      Should it be rather:

‘So God guided those who believed with his permission in all these differences…’

So the بإذنه is متعلق بالفعل to the fi’l آمنوا rather than هدى.
