These type of questions are not that simple to answer. Because no 1 factor cause anything. Also each factor is interlinked with each other.

If religion was the problem, then Saudia, UAE, Malaysia etc and Golden era of Islamic civilization wouldnt have occured.

There is avery good book on this topic “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty” I will suggest you to read it.
In short they say attitude, political conditions, geography, objectivity, rule of law, culture every thing cause it. While reading it keep in mind this book has been written in paradigm of Capatalism. Thier theories if taken accurate will never predict rise of china
