Many groups of people mostly among the Shias and the Hanafis claim to be superior to others saying that they are sayyeds .They don’t marry non-sayyeds .What is this all about. Does Islam also have a caste system like in Hinduism.

    Assalam-u-Alaikum,

Islam has declared that all human beings are children of Adam and Eve, and they are all equal. The only basis for superiority in the eyes of Allah is ‘taqwa’. This is a clear declaration of the Quran and the Prophet (pbuh). Besides, there is nothing in Shariah which prohibits marriages with people belonging to different castes as there is no superior or inferior status of anyone.

On the other hand, the people who claim superiority on the basis of caste and creed have no argument, reference or any other evidence from the sources of Islam.
