    Al-Baqarah – 2:20

Could someone explain why the people who deny the Quran and try to deceive themselves walk when the lightning (Quran) shines? Surely they should be startled in this moment and standing still, frozen.

I don’t understand why they walk therein when the lightning shines and then stand still when the Quran goes away.

    Please could someone explain

Is it that these people are in far misguidance and are wandering in the desert.

They are not completely doomed like the people in the previous example who were made deaf dumb and blind- they still have a chance.

So when the Quran comes they walk and are guided a bit.

But when it leaves they go back to their old ways?

This would make sense that these people, when they hear the Quran, they have a bit of direction and take some benefit from it. Though when the little benefit they get from finding direction from lightning is not that significant since they are still stuck in their misguided deviance in the desert rain

The first parable depicts those hypocrites who in their inmost hearts did not believe in Islam at all, but had become ‘Muslims’ for the sake of self-interest or expediency. The second parable gives a description of those hypocrites who were suffering from doubt, suspicion and lack of faith. Though they were not wholly unbelievers, they practised Islam only to the extent which might not involve them in trouble. In this parable rainfall stands for Islam which came as a blessing to humanity; pitch darkness, thunder and lightning stand for the impending obstacles, the threatening dangers and the glaring difficulties which were being experienced on account of the strong resistance from the opponents of Islam. When the situation eased a little, they began to move onward on the path of Islam, but when the clouds of difficulties began to appear, or when they were given such commands as were against their self-interest or their superstitious beliefs and prejudices, they again stood still in sheer perplexity.Ref: Tafhim ul Qur’an

This explanation makes sense. Though I think Ghamidi sahab takes this to mean the Jews rather than hypocrites in al-Bayan. If they were Jews then it wouldn’t make sense for the second parable. Though the first parable I think could be referring to the hardened disbelievers

I would think perhaps the lightning is the glimmer and light that allows them to move slightly in the darkness of their misguidance.

Then when the light of Islam is taken away (the easy rules to follow), and the difficulties arise they stand still in the darkness of misguidance and being lost in hypocrisy.

Though this group is less extreme than the others because God has not yet taken away their sight and hearing so they still have a chance.

Though even if we take the second tamtheel to be about hypocrites I don’t understand.

Because lightning would symbolise the warnings and harsh words of the Quran. So how does it act as a guidance in the darkness of hypocrisy and misguidance?

Surely they should be startled and fearing the harsh words.

And when the harsh word are taken they should be walking as much as they can in the deception of themselves and misguidance
