Could someone pls clarify on the issue of slavery in Islam. We know Islam opened the door from slavery to freedom but what about the door into slavery ?

As per Ghamidi saab, enemies in war when subdued could be taken as POW’s but not slaves and could then be given freedom if the opposing side pays an amount for them.

Whats the major difference here between slavery and POW, if money is to be paid to free them in both case?

Umer bhai, thanks for the time and effort.

The discussions shared are clear to me but the basic question asked above still isn’t clear.

The basic differences that have come to my mind are these:

      1. Slaves could be traded further but pow couldn’t and I guess its clear from the narrations that the pows weren’t traded further.

      2. The reason for giving the pows under the authority of the sahabas r.a was since there was no integrated holding facility to feed and look over the pows by the community itself. And the reason of the payment req to release a POW was to pay up for the handling cost afforded by the sahabi. (I heard this in one of Ghamidi saab lec but can’t remember which one exactly)

Pls let me know if this is what the diff is or is it sth else ?

This is correct, making someone a slave means complete ownership of one’s body just like a commodity, while prisoner holds his freedom w.r.t basic human rights but is being kept as captive for his war crimes.
