A person has more than 6 lakh rupees total cash as total assets. He is jobless for six years and totally depend upon parents for living. Previously he also paid significant portion of his cash as expenses for his child to her divorced wife and expects further demand from her. He is not able to earn his living due to reasons. I want to ask if ZAKAT payment is applicable or FARZ on him.

Zakat is payable on savings after fulfilling your expenditures. Near future needs too should be considered as expenditures.

If a person has assets and meets nisab then zakat becomes due on him. Exemptions only include items of personal use (e.g. car, house, etc.) or any amount exempted by the state. In a situation where the person can’t afford to pay the total amount due, he may calculate his zakat every year and pay it in installments.
