Ghamidi sahab said in a video that if someone wants to become an Islamic scholar then they should do this in place of their time for a profession.
How then would the person earn a living as well as be a full time Islamic studies student/scholar?

Salam. What he meant was that those who wish to dedicate themselves to Islam may adopt research and pedagogy (teaching) in Islam as a career/profession. In this way, not only will they remain engaged in serving Islam but will also be able to earn their living through this very career.
