An-Nisa’ – 4:24
Arabic
وَٱلۡمُحۡصَنَٰتُ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ إِلَّا مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُكُمْۖ كِتَٰبَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡكُمْۚ وَأُحِلَّ لَكُم مَّا وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكُمۡ أَن تَبۡتَغُواْ بِأَمۡوَٰلِكُم مُّحۡصِنِينَ غَيۡرَ مُسَٰفِحِينَۚ فَمَا ٱسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُم بِهِۦ مِنۡهُنَّ فَـَٔاتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ فَرِيضَةًۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فِيمَا تَرَٰضَيۡتُم بِهِۦ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱلۡفَرِيضَةِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا
The Quran uses the word ajr for what we call mahr. But ajr means price. So how does the symbolism for taking the responsibility of the wife’s expenses hold up?
It seems more like your buying the woman with the word ajr.

Ajr can refer to the Ajr of her services which she commits to provide to her husband. If this Ajr is the price of her own self, she would not be better than a slave girl, but we know that a woman has right to get Khula to end her Nikah.

Can’t a slave girl also decide not to have sexual relations with her master? So how would this logic still apply?

Slaves had no rights except for moral ones.
