What is the authenticity of this Hadith and if this is an authentic Hadith then what does it mean by “his prayer will not be accepted for forty days”.

One of these ahaadeeth was narrated by Ibn Maajah (3377) from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr who said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he again drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he again drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days and if he dies he will go to Hell. But if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he commits (this sin) again, then Allaah pledges to make him drink the mud of khabaal on the Day of Resurrection.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allaah, what is the mud of khabaal?” He said, “The juices of the people of Hell.”

@UmerQureshi Asselamu aleykum, By watching these lectures of our respected Ustad-e-Mohtaram (ha), it seems that Ustad-e-Mohtaram regards these narrations as authentic. But, later i saw the analysis of Mufti Abu Layth (ha), which provided many proofs that these narrations are weak, and the details about their transmitters. We know that consuming Alcohol is a sin, the bad handiwork of Satan, and the mother of all evils. But, This idea goes against reason that just because of drinking Alcohol, the drunk guy will go to hellfire. (Also, It is not confirmed that the person will go to hell or not, even after he has committed zina). Can you please tell me that what’s your opinion on the analysis of Mufti. JazakAllah.

This chain of Ibn-e-Maja has been categorized as Sahih by Albani, Abdullah Azmi, Shuaib Al-Arnaut and Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai.

Following are the primary narrators on whom criticism has been raised by Mufti Abu-Layth Sahab:

Abdullah bin Feroz AD-Daylmi – Almost all Scholars of Jarah-wa-Tadeel categorize him as Siqqa, inlcuding, Ibn-e-Hibban, Al-Ajli, Ibn-e-Hajr Asqalani, Ad-Dahbi, Yahya bin Moen, Yaqub bin Sufyan Al-Fuswi.

Rabia bin Yazid: Almost all Scholars of Jarah-wa-Tadeel categorize him as Siqqa, inlcuding, Ibn-e-Hibban, Nisai, Al-Ajli, Ibn-e-Hajr Asqalani, Ad-Dahbi, Ibn-e-Ammar Al-Musli, Yaqub bin Sufyan Al-Fuswi, Al-Sudusi. Bukhari and Muslim both narrate from him.

Al-Auzai: Almost all Scholars of Jarah-wa-Tadeel categorize him as Siqqa. The only scholar who categorize him as weak is Imam Ahmed bin Hambal. Bukhari and Muslim both narrate from him.

Al-Walid bin Muslim: Considered Siqqa but with Tadlis.

      Ibn-e-Hajr Asqalani writes:

“Al-Walid bin Muslim al-Dimashqi is well-known and agreed on Siqqa in himself, but they criticized him for a lot Tadlis and Al-Taswia. Al-Daraqutni said: Al-Walid used to narrate hadiths from Al-Awzai on the authority of weak shiekhs on the authority of trustworthy shiekhs, Al-Awzai caught up with them, so Al-Walid would drop the weak and make it from Al-Awzai from the trustworthy ones“.

      (Fath-ul-Bari – 1/450 [Dar-ul Marfa, Beirut])

Also, Bukhari and Muslim both narrate from him. His chains from Al-Awzai, among others, are acceptable to the scholars of Rijal.

As for the content of this narration, it has been explained by Ghamidi Sahab in ample detail in the second video posted above.

The act of drinking itself is a major sin for which forgiveness should be sought because major sins can only be forgiven when proper forgiveness is sought for them (Details on Major Sins: Discussion 80980). Hence when a person drinks and gets drunk as mentioned in this Hadith [مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ وَسَکِرَ(جس شخص نے شراب پی اور پی کر مدہوش ہو گیا)] then he deserves to go to Hell, not that he will definitely but in this condition, after committing a major sin which deprives oneself even of the opportunity to ask forgiveness becauase of lack of consciousness (i.e. Drinking profusely), it is enough to take one to Hell unless he repents sincerely. But if He keeps repeating that sin over and over again, then this is reflection of Arrogance on the part of ther person and arrogance is the biggest of all sins for which there exists extreme punishment (Quran 7:40:41). The words of Hadith are in the style of a warning and not in the style of a Law.

Secondly, Salah and Prayer (‘Dua‘) not being accepted for fourty days in case of Alcohol consumption means that Allah will put that person’s Salah/Prayer acceptance on hold for fourty days to see whether one has sincerely repented from this sin and whether he relapses or not. Since alcohol addiction can result in a relapse, so fourty days are to ensure one’s serious repentance and also consistency in one’s repentance. This is in accordance with Quran (9:94 AND 9:105).

Commitment of Zina is a major Sin for which there is warning of eternal Hell as per Quran 25:68-69.
