“Whoever catches up with a rakah of Fajr prayer before the sun rises has caught up with Fajr, and whoever catches up with a rakah of Asr prayer before the sun sets has caught up with Asr.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (579) and Muslim (608).

Please explain this hadith…as i have asked the question should we pray namaz during sunset or sunrise..you said we should wait for that…but looking at this hadith it looks it is permissible to pray even at time to catch up for that prayer…please explain

As a principle, praying intentionally at sunset and sunrise timings is clearly forbidden. However, this hadith is merely explaining the exceptional situation, where someone because of some genuine reason, failed to pray at time, but whenever he got time to pray, he realized that there is still some time left to sunset or surise, he can start his prayer by taking advantage of few minutes and if during his prayer, the sun either sets or rises, his prayer will be considered valid. This Hadith is not allowing prayer at sunset or sunrise, instead, it is explaining a situation where sunset or sinrise happens when one started praying before that.
