How can we guide any Shia about Maatam. That this is not good thing. When we say them not to do this they replied

Hmaara jism h aap ko q takleef ho rahi ha tum b yazeedi ho jo tumhain takleef ho rahi

When we say it is forbidden by prophet they refer prophet Yaqoob that he also used to do this.

Should we guide them or not?

Religion of Shia is based in particular events in history. This interpretation is later validated by re-interpretation of Quran and seerah

The concept of Imamat was produced aswell.

To keep this particular historical narrative alive and to keep this particular ideology meaningful, the, Shia scholars, started holding gatherings to remind people of the events. As with all history, more and more details were added to it. This movement gradually evolved into what we call Azadari.

The concept of hurting yourself because of some sin is age old and adopted by many many religions, dynasties, spiritual schools. Harakiri in Japan is a famous example.

I do not think we should tell any Shia to stop it. Because it’s been hundred of yrs of tradition and almost critical remarks have been answered by Shia scholars.

It’s better to talk to them about their historical narrative, the flaws in the concept of Imamat, the concept of Ghaib Imam and it’s sun concept Wilayat e Faqhee

Nahjul Balaga Sermon #233 or 234, Ali bin Abi Talib during a eulogy for the Prophet – peace be upon him – , “If you had not ordered endurance and prevented us from bewailing, we would have produced a store of tears and even then the pain would not have subsided, and this grief would not have ended, and they would have been too little of our grief for you.”

Nahjul Balaga Sayings 144 Amir al-mu’minin, peace be upon him, said: Endurance comes according to the affliction. He who beats his hand on the thigh in his affliction ruins all his good actions.
