Only a Quranic verse can abrogate another verse. Consequently, both the abrogating and the abrogated verses exist in the Quran. For example: 58:13 abrogates 58:12; similarly 4:11 abrogates 2:180-2. In other words, no abrogated verse of the Quran is found outside the Quran, and no Hadīth can abrogate a Quranic directive.
