    السلام عليكم

I have a craving for understanding things and, so, I download books from websites where they are available for free. I am confused as to whether this is stealing or not. In a way, it is a just an online library. I intend to purchase the books when I can afford them. But right now, I’m a student in Pakistan and don’t earn. I can’t ask my parents to spend so much money on books. And I feel like if I wait and don’t read until i can afford them, I would have spent so much time not learning and understanding where I could have. But, of course, if this is Haram, I will بنصر الله stop downloading books until I can afford them. Is this Haram or is this like a library? Please clarify. جزاكم الله

Bro, not downloading all books from the web is considered piracy. You can check if a certain book’s Public Domain (Copyright) is expired or not. You can google it. Usually, a book gets free from copyrights issues after 70 years of the author’s death. However, this is only for books that are old enough.

      السلام علیکم!

So, Faisal Bhai should I stop immediately or can I continue reading the necessary course books whilst I research the places where I can purchase some of them?

Ideally one should stop from an immoral act as soon as they realize it, however, there can be situations when that’s not immediately possible. In those situations, one should sincerely work towards an alternate arrangement while continuing as before, but with genuine regret in their heart. Also one should sincerely repent for any past mistakes. Insha’allah they will be forgiven.

السلام علیکم! فیصل بھائی اب میں اچھا خاصہ ڈر گیا ہوں۔

I talked to my father and he doesn’t agree with “downloading free books is wrong,” having well-reasoned arguments of his own. Here in Pakistan, affording Cambridge course books is quite difficult for us currently. ان شاء اللہ I am going to start earning soon and then I may be able to purchase them ان شاء اللہ.

I don’t want to do anything that is wrong عند الله. How do I know whether it is ok عند الله for me to use free books until I can afford them myself? Another option is to maybe just leave education until I can afford the books. But I don’t think that that would be good for my parents. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
