    Assalamu alaikum

I read somewhere on the internet that Prophet (S.A.W ) used to seek refuge in Allah from unbeneficial knowledge. Is there any authentic tradition that mentions this ?

Also, what is meant by unbeneficial knowledge? I mean, I am a science student, but I love to read about the history and geography of other places, biographies, their cultures etc. I also love learning different languages (of the countries that I never plan to move to ) because it’s my hobby and because I’m interested in their cultures.

Please enlighten me about this topic.

    Thank you

Any knowledge which helps a person groom, and makes him a better person both for himself and his surroundings is ‘nafay ilm‘. Learning about science, geopgraphy, languages and cultures cannot be categorized as unbeneficial knowledge, as they all play a role in helping one understand this world better and ways of dealing with this world and different cultures.
